A conical manhole in construction consists of several key components, each serving a specific purpose to ensure functionality and structural integrity. Starting from the bottom, the base slab provides a solid foundation, typically made of reinforced concrete to support the load.
Above this is the invert channel, which directs the flow of wastewater or stormwater and is carefully sloped to maintain proper drainage. The manhole shaft rises vertically from the base and is usually constructed with precast concrete rings or brickwork, forming the main body of the structure.
As the shaft approaches the surface, it transitions into the conical section — a sloped, tapering structure that reduces the diameter of the manhole to accommodate the access opening. This conical section provides structural stability by evenly distributing loads from above while narrowing the opening for safety and accessibility.
At the top, the corbel or reducing slab further supports the frame and cover, which seals the manhole, preventing unauthorized access and ensuring surface-level stability. Ventilation holes may be incorporated for airflow, depending on the system’s needs. Proper detailing ensures durability, ease of maintenance, and long-term performance.
